The next Colorado Geomorphology Organization (CoGO) meeting is on Wednesday, January 28, 2008. We will be meeting at 7:00 pm on the campus of the University of Colorado at Denver (Room #3523 in the North Classroom building). See the map link to the right for directions.
Vince Sortman will be giving a presentation on Regenerative Stream Restoration. Vince is Senior Fluvial Geomorphologist/Technical Team Leader at Biohabitats, a multi-disciplinary firm specializing in Ecological Restoration, Conservation Planning, and Regenerative Design. He earned his BS in Geological Sciences from the Pennsylvania State University and his MS in Geology from Colorado State University where he studied under Dr. Stan Schumm. Vince has been working in streams and in particular stream restoration for 20 years. Most of his work has been in the mid-Atlantic states. His presentation will focus on a new stream restoration technique that Biohabitats is developing. They call it Regenerative Stream Restoration because it creates an entirely new hydrologic regime on the floodplain which allows for a totally new ecological system to flourish. This new technique dispenses the bankfull channel and thus all flows are spread out onto the floodplain. This attenuates storm flows, reduces velocities, captures and cycles carbon and nutrients, and hydrates the floodplain.
Also, several folks will be grabbing dinner at the Rio (1525 Blake Street) at 5:30pm, everyone is welcome to join in.
